LAGO: a case study by LAIN

A three-page website and an Instagram carousel for LAGO Design, an interior design and bespoke furniture studio: a very large wordmark on the first photograph, white panels, small type and warm, quiet rooms.

LAGO Design is an interior design and bespoke furniture studio. The brief was a website that sells rooms the way the studio makes them, slowly and with the pictures doing the talking, so everything else is kept out of their way: a very large wordmark, white panels and small type in a single weight.

Rooms first.
Interface second.

LAGO designs interiors and makes furniture to measure, and both are sold on photographs. So the website's first job is to get out of their way: a pale paper ground, small type in one weight and a single oversized wordmark that stands on the first picture.

Everything else is arranged like a room. White panels sit on the photographs the way furniture sits on a floor, square-cornered and quiet, the services open as a list of plain lines, and the page ends the way it began, with the wordmark, white on black.

A round table, a long window and nothing else

Quiet colours,
one face.

The palette comes from the rooms. Graphite and paper carry the pages, the footer and every black button, and the warm tones are sampled from the photographs themselves: walnut panelling, clay brick, an oak island, linen upholstery. The type is one face in one weight, in three sizes and a label, so the wordmark is the only loud thing on the page.

The typeface: one weight, from the wordmark's neighbour to the smallest label

The hierarchy: wordmark, headline, subheading, body, label and button

The O is
a window.

The O of the wordmark is a plain circle with a heavy rim, so we treated it as one. Scroll and it opens on the studio's rooms, each arriving like a ripple on still water, until the circle gives way to the whole picture. Move the pointer and the room leans with you.

Timber walls, low furniture and a pendant of light.

Pale cabinetry and one block of oak.

A round table, plaster walls and old beams.

A low bed, warm brick and a view over the hills.

A floating vanity, a long mirror and one plant.

Stone, timber and a pool beyond the glass.

A page that gets
out of the way.

Three pages on a pale ground. The home page opens on a photograph with the wordmark standing on it, the studio page turns a run of rooms into a gallery, and the services page lists what LAGO does as three plain rows. Panels and buttons are white and square, and every page closes on the wordmark in white on black.

Our story, three services, the craftsmanship process, two featured projects and the call to start.

The approach, two featured collections and a gallery of rooms, details and furniture.

Interior design, bespoke furniture and space styling, each with what it includes, then the journal.

The page,
one room at a time.

The same few moves everywhere: a photograph that runs to the edge, a white panel that sits on it, rows divided by hairlines and one black button. Here are the pieces, cut from the pages.

The first screen: the menu, the wordmark and a white panel, all on one photograph

Services: one wide picture and two tall ones, each named in a corner

The craftsmanship process: four rows, and the open one shows a room

Explore our creations: two collections on a sliding strip

The gallery: rooms, details and a few lines of text, on a hairline grid

Services as plain rows, each with what it includes and one picture

Spaces designed with intention, and the journal beneath it

Close enough
to touch.

Between the rooms the site goes in close: a drawer with the LAGO plate, smoked glass, marble behind oak, a bronze sink. These pictures carry the studio's other promise, that the furniture is handcrafted.

Ten slides,

The website told as a post: the first screen, the story, the gallery and the services, each cut from the same pages, with white panels and large pictures running on from one slide to the next.
