Aerium: a case study by LAIN
A four-page website and a mobile app for Aerium, a smart home climate system that learns how a household lives: dark frosted glass over photographs of quiet rooms, white type with one serif italic word, and a fan shaped like a loop with a ring above it.

Aerium is a smart home climate system that learns a household's habits and adjusts temperature and airflow quietly in the background. The brief was a four-page website and a mobile app that make that intelligence feel calm rather than technical: frosted glass over photographs of real rooms, one product that does the talking, and a serif italic for the human word.

Intelligence beneath
the surface.
Aerium does its work where nobody looks. It learns when a room is used, how warm it should be and how the air should move, then adjusts without being asked. A design for it has to say two things at once: that there is a great deal of intelligence in it, and that none of it needs your attention.
So the interface is a surface, literally. Panels of frosted glass sit over photographs of quiet rooms, a few controls float on them, and everything that is not a control is left out. The product itself, a fan shaped like a loop with a ring above it, is the only object that is allowed to be bright.
A room with nothing in it but light: every screen is laid over a photograph like this
A home that
lets the air in.
The mark is a house drawn as a rounded pentagon with a pitched roof, and a quarter of it is bitten away at the lower left. In the bite sit three arcs on one centre, the strokes a signal or a gust is usually drawn with. Read together it is a home taking in air, which is all the product does.
- A square, one axis through the middle, and the edges of the body running at thirty degrees.
- A circle on the lower left takes a quarter out of the body and gives the arcs their room.
- Three arcs on that centre, each one step further out, with round ends and half the thickness of the step between them.
Dark glass,
one warm metal.
The ground is a deep teal-black that lifts into slate wherever light falls on it. Panels are frosted glass at a few percent white, text is white, and the only warm note in the whole system is the copper rim of the fan. Headlines are plain sans with one word in a serif italic, the human part of the sentence.

Air in.
Order out.
The fan is the one object the whole design is built around: a loop you can see through, with a ring floating above it. So this chapter lets the air do what the product promises. It begins as the room has it, warm and unsorted. As you scroll it is drawn into the loop and leaves the other side in clean, level streams while the dial settles on 22. Move the pointer and you stir it.
The room as it is: warm, uneven, moving in every direction.
Aerium reads it and draws the air toward the loop.
Out the other side it leaves in level streams, and the ring lights.
Three screens,
one fan.
The app opens on every room as a photograph with a few switches over it. One level in is the fan's own screen: the dial and its four modes on a card of frosted glass, the product above it. The third screen is the room itself, with each device pinned where it stands.
Home: every room, the air conditioner and its dial on top
The fan: temperature, four modes, fan level and a timer
The room: lights and climate pinned where they are
A page that
is also a surface.
Four pages on the same dark glass. The home page opens on the app itself, two phones with cards of glass floating off them, and walks through the features as a bento of panels. About puts faces and a bedroom on the page, features goes deep on the dial, and contact keeps one form beside the product.
The app, a row of numbers, a room with its devices pinned, a bento of features, a radar of rooms and the closing call.
The team in one photograph, a bedroom, four principles, the vision and mission, and a grid of portraits.
One phone held in a hand, the dial in detail, rooms, energy and a three-step setup.
A short form beside the product, the channels, and the questions people ask first.
The glass,
one panel at a time.
The same few moves everywhere: a headline with one italic word, a panel of glass, a hairline grid behind it, a white pill for the one action. These are the pieces, cut from the pages.
The first screen: a floating bar, one headline and the app with its controls lifted off it
Features as a bento of glass panels: the fan, the modes, the rooms, energy and schedules
Rooms as a radar: three rings around one signal, with each room sitting on its ring
Every detail: the phone at the centre, six capabilities around it on widening rings
The people behind it, as portraits on glass cards
The call to action: a panel that opens round the two phones
The footer, closing on the wordmark in the serif italic, across the whole width
Real rooms,
real people.
The design leans on photographs: quiet rooms for the devices to live in, and a team shot in the same dark, directional light as the product. They carry the warmth the glass cannot.
